Sichtbare Bilder – Unsichtbare Bilder

Trevor Paglens forensischer Blick auf Machine Vision und Machine Realism

What consequences are to be expected when artificial intelligence creates imagery that is in turn interpreted by other algorithms? At stake are inherent power positions of meaning assignment and the associated (ethical) responsibility. Especially since these processes take place invisibly for humans, in the secrecy of the algorithm. In his investigative research, photographs and installations, Trevor Paglen explores the principles of this boundary that extends towards the invisible.

Between the skin of your teeth

In the spatial installation, thin steel rods traverse the room like lines that link the individual sculptures with one another. They plunge into the architecture and re-emerge from it. They pierce anda mirror each other and eventually branch out in the enclosed metal of glass objects. Collectively, the sculptures tell each other their stories: they relate to the tension between the different materialities, balance, and the movement of breathing, lightness and, not least, a secret longing to recognise organic bodies in abstract forms.
