Kritik der Polizei

Untersuchung von unabhängigen Meldemechanismen als Methode für bürgernahe Polizeiarbeit und Fehlerkultur in Deutschland

The thesis is concerned with a critique of the police system. The primary idea of the written work was to engage with the current debate surrounding the police and to consider the statement, All cops are bastards. This should be achieved following a more nuanced approach and through an investigation based on a concrete question. The examination reflected upon which improvements would be possible through the introduction of independent reporting centres for police officers and civilians as they engage with the police.

Kritik der Polizei

Noteworthy areas and findings from the research, such as racist police practices, police violence as well as systematic ignorance and critical error culture within the police, were interpreted from a visual perspective in the practical work. In a series of illustrations comprised of etchings, these problematic issues were rendered into concrete representations. In the motifs, obvious references to the police situation were consciously omitted. The objective was to explore the topic in the most sensitive and inconspicuous manner possible, which is why a strictly factual or documentary style was eschewed in the practical work. It is instead a free, entirely playful reading of circumstances within a complex system.

Etching was the technique of choice because it permits translation and simplification and it gives the line its own sense of control. The work seeks to gain a closer perspective, a snapshot of a subject that is extremely complex and, most importantly, always changing.
