Zwischen Aneignung & Abneigung
Public spaces are projection surfaces for the urban population and as such they should enable a high degree of appropriation. A design standard is demanded that fulfils a multitude of sometimes contradictory needs. Should this not be the case, a risk exists that the products designed will incur rejection and this may occasionally cause vandalism or violence. Despite the fact that society is largely responsible for its environment, it is the designers who, on behalf of a great many people, make important decisions concerning the design of the public sphere. This requires the capability to recognise and interpret levels of use that go beyond individual use.
Habiton
The principal role in Habiton is played by solitary wild bees, which can be seen as the starting point for the settlement of a wide range of insects. The requirements of the individual species became the central design element and were channeled into an easy-to-install and low-maintenance system. 3D-printed ceramic modules act as outer shells that can be adjusted in the most ideal way to the nesting needs of wild bees through the employment of various filling materials. Even in its smallest unit as a single module, Habiton offers the opportunity to create structures that transcend different areas. Moreover, it can be expanded as required to promote resilient species communities. This ultimately also benefits humanity as part of the global ecosystem.
