Tableaux vivants
The Diplom thesis focuses on tableaux vivants (living pictures). The term refers to representations of groups of people who remain in a composition in order to depict an image of an artistic work. Jean-Luc Godard works with re-enactments of artistic works in his film Passion. In the first part of the study on the history of tableaux vivants, characteristics and features of tableaux vivants are elaborated. In the second part, scenes from Godard’s Passion are examined with regard to the characteristics of the tableaux vivants that were previously expanded on. This led to the understanding that the re-enactments in Passion contain elements of tableaux vivants.
Die Große Freiheit
What lured me from the provinces of Hesse to northern Hamburg was the promise of the Große Freiheit. Somewhere between the hot food counter, the Spielbudenplatz, the Davidwache and the Hamburger Berg, I found a sense of contentment in the neighbourhood as it transforms itself into a sea of lights in the evening. The pandemic has dulled that sparkle though. Empty kiosks, a closed Penny and the ‘great freedom’ have caused this jewel to lose its shine. Some facets of the temptation stand out more strikingly. The point of reference here is the church, right next to the Große Freiheit road, which offers church services right next to the party mile. In my thesis, the central motif of the snake and the apple from the creation story as the subject of temptation is combined with snapshots of the night in a series of illustrations. The illustrations were created by digital means and then transferred to canvas.
