Vagina Dentata

My Diplom work is a hybrid between theory and practice. My theoretical work on the topic of vagina dentata resulted in a graphic novel that illustrates my theoretical approaches.

The Vagina Dentata is now a substitute – a metaphor – for the castration anxiety of men. Or at least that is what one reads when first doing a search on vagina dentata on Google, or when researching many of the leading scholarly studies of the subject. Yet it was only through colonisation that vagina dentata was westernised and turned into a male fear. I present a different perspective on vagina dentata that adopts a feminist stance, arguing that there is an inherent purpose in the depiction of the vulva as something evil and that is the systemic control of patriarchy. Myths and narratives have a powerful effect on society. Simultaneously, they are its product and have an effect on it. They are similar to parenting guides from earlier times, and most accounts of vagina dentata serve to maintain a status quo in which women are subordinated with a variety of attributions. Indeed, the constructed image of the penis- devouring vulva is used as a weapon to prevent women from a self-determined escape from the patriarchal ideal of womanhood. In the event that a woman should take a wrong step, she would be accused of being evil, of having made poor decisions, and of having bad habits or character traits. The woman is now considered a monster, a whore, a libber and / or a bitch.

Vagina Dentata

Through my graphic novel, I explore the various approaches in the way the vagina dentata is addressed and I analyse the myth from today’s perspective. My objective is to shed light on this form of misogyny and to bring clarity to the application of this construct for the purpose of combating it. With the help of the comic, I rectify these distortions and allow voices to be heard that have disappeared from a prevailing cultural understanding.
