Substitutiver und immersiver Einsatz von Medien in Fernbeziehungen

This work concerns the subject of substitutive and immersive use of media in long-distance relationships. The purpose was to ascertain whether intimacy mediated by technology is wholly positive or has a bizarre aftertaste. Does the application of media in long-distance relationships resonate with an awareness of the artificiality of a mediated life, or can this be completely suppressed? Finally, while the mechanisation of love is reinforced by the Corona pandemic, which still persists in some circumstances, one needs to ask oneself to what extent the immersion in technology should become the norm in order to maintain closeness with one’s partner.

Distant Intimacy

Owing to the corona pandemic, couples in long-distance relationships worldwide were, or are, separated by challenging travel conditions, border closures, and quarantine measures. They therefore have no choice but to take advantage of what technology has to offer. The video focuses on the intimate relationship between people and the devices that perform as transmitters of emotions and sexuality. This tender and erotic practice thus becomes a matter of course, and certain questions arise: how much do we normalise this highly intimate use of technology? Has a new understanding of sexuality come about? In addition, there is the consideration of whether these activities are stirring, or whether they just become a never- ending monotony in a depressing situation.
