Kunstlager im Ausstellungsraum

Wie verhält sich das Konzept der Depotausstellung in Bezug auf Demokratisierung und Marktkonformität?

In the theoretical work, the art repository and the repository exhibition are contrasted with the archive and the white cube. The focus of attention is on the democratisation process of the institutions. Furthermore, the question of marketing will be posed in exemplary examinations of gallery storage and display depots. Initially, the topic is approached in relation to the museum in its entirety, beginning with the Wunderkammer and ending with the digitalisation process of current museums. In the last part of the work, the Schaudepot in Basel and specifically the exhibition on Aby Warburg’s Atlas project in Berlin are examined.

Verpackt und Weggeräumt

The work explores, through theoretical and practical means, the aesthetic effect of art depots of museums, galleries, and art makers. The physical work shows precisely these spaces as paintings: boxes and crates awaiting transportation elsewhere and which contain art works that have been cleared away. It is typical of the cultural world that its objects are forever in a state of waiting, yet they are not appreciated enough to be exhibited. They await a change in an exhibition idea, its direction, or when the gaze of a curator encounters them. Or they remain locked away until the next marketing point in time in which they do not play a role as an identity-bearing object, but as a financial investment: as consumer goods, between spectacles, art fairs and white cubes, always in competition with the next object, and yet always on the verge of being forgotten.
