Welche Rolle spielt die Hierarchisierung zwischen Kunst, Handwerk und Design für die Position des heutigen Kunsthandwerks?

The theoretical work relates to the valuation and hierarchical understanding of arts and crafts. In doing so, the thesis closely examines a devaluation of arts and crafts in the course of the twentieth century and, furthermore, it illuminates what influence this devaluation has on arts and crafts and the criteria of contemporary art today. As a consequence, arts and crafts initially appear to regain importance in the multiplicity of possibilities of postmodernism and the wholly industrialised present. It is here that an idealisation of the workshop and craftsmanship occurs. Does this idealisation lead to a revaluation of arts and crafts? And what is therelationship between art, arts and crafts, and design today?

Abstraktion in Malerei und Keramik

Following on from my theoretical work, I was interested in the tipping point between applied and free artistic work. The classic vase shape served as a starting point for alienation through asymmetries, irregularities and deformations.

In an installation, the resulting forms are shown on a spread on the floor made up of drawings. This makes the processual connection clear, but also blurs the distinction between object and drawing. The pictorial world of the drawings was ultimately taken up in two paintings, which are also shown in the space.
